How the detection logic works

The detector runs two independent signals into an onboard microcontroller: an optical signal representing the smoke level near the head, and a temperature signal representing the air temperature near it.

The important part is what happens to the temperature signal. The processing extracts only rate-of-rise information to combine with the optical signal, which means the detector will not respond to a slow temperature increase even if the temperature eventually reaches a high level. It is watching the rate of change, not absolute heat. A large, sudden temperature change can produce an alarm on its own, without smoke, if it is sustained for 20 seconds.

That optical-plus-rate-of-rise combination is what gives the XP95 MultiSensor its broad fire sensitivity while resisting nuisance triggers — and it is also why it should not be treated as a substitute for a heat detector in a position that needs one.

Will it alarm if a room just gets hot slowly?

No. The thermal path uses rate-of-rise only, so a slow temperature increase will not trigger it even if the temperature eventually reaches a high level. Smoke is the primary path; heat contributes through rate of change.

Can it alarm on heat alone?

Yes, but only on a large, sudden temperature change sustained for 20 seconds — not on gradual heating.

Can it replace an ionisation detector?

The datasheet states it may be used in place of an ionisation detector in many instances. Confirm suitability for the specific application and standard rather than treating it as a blanket substitution.
