Platform overview

Simplex is one of the longest-established names in fire alarm systems (founded in the United States in the 1890s) and today is a flagship brand of Johnson Controls. Its current ES-series platform is a global, UL/ULC-listed intelligent addressable family spanning compact, mid-size and large control units, a complete TrueAlarm analog sensor range, the distinctive TrueAlert ES self-testing notification line, integrated voice/mass notification, IP/fibre networking, and a mature graphical-management and remote-service software ecosystem. (The same platform is also sold under the Autocall brand within Johnson Controls.)

Two technologies define the platform. First, TrueAlarm analog sensing — sensors report a continuous analog value to the control unit, which makes the alarm decision using per-point environmental compensation, drift management and selectable sensitivity, rather than the device latching itself. Second, TrueAlert ES — self-testing addressable notification appliances (horns, strobes and speakers) that automatically test themselves and report results, replacing manual appliance testing. Underpinning both are two signalling lines: IDNet/IDNet 2 for addressable detection and IDNAC for powered addressable notification.

Control panels (ES series)

The ES-series control units share a common signalling architecture (IDNet detection + IDNAC notification), the TrueAlarm/TrueAlert ES device ecosystem, and the ES panel programmer, scaling from a single compact cabinet to a multi-bay, networked campus master.

The 4100ES is the flagship, for medium-to-large facilities and multi-building campuses. Its 32-bit master controller has a dual-configuration program CPU, onboard service port and 2 GB of compact flash, with a colour-coded operator interface (upgradeable to the InfoAlarm colour command center). It supports roughly 2,500 addressable points across up to 30 IDNet 2 SLCs, drives TrueAlert ES notification on IDNAC, integrates VCC voice/mass notification, and networks via ES Net. A Network Display Unit (NDU) variant annunciates up to 12,000 network points. Power is provided by 9 A SPS/EPS/XPS/RPS supplies with battery charging from 6.2–110 Ah.

The 4010ES is the mid-size control unit for small-to-medium buildings, supporting up to 1,000 addressable IDNet points, up to 127 VESDA aspiration points and up to 2,000 points of annunciation. It includes an 8 A power supply (up to 2 A auxiliary) and battery charger for up to 110 Ah batteries, four onboard Class A/B 3 A notification appliance circuits, and a programmable 2 A auxiliary relay. It is fully compatible with TrueAlert ES appliances and TrueAlarm sensors, and is networkable on ES Net.

The 4007ES Hybrid is the compact control unit, notable for combining addressable and conventional detection in one panel. The standard unit provides one IDNet+ SLC for up to 100 addressable points plus four conventional NACs and a 6 A power supply/charger; an optional loop-expansion module (4007-9803) adds a second isolated, short-circuit-protected loop and a further 75 addressable points. Its hybrid design suits smaller sites and retrofits that mix intelligent and conventional devices.

Signalling architecture — IDNet & IDNAC

Simplex separates detection and notification onto two purpose-built signalling lines, both addressable and both with built-in short-circuit isolation.

IDNet is the addressable detection signalling line carrying TrueAlarm sensors, modules and call points. IDNet 2 (on the 4100ES/4010ES) supports up to 250 addressable devices per loop with dual short-circuit isolating outputs (Class A, B or X), with wiring up to 4,000 ft for the first 125 devices and 2,500 ft for 126–250 devices, and total T-tapped lengths up to ~12,500 ft for Class B. On the 4007ES, the equivalent line is IDNet+ (up to 100 points, +75 per expansion loop). The legacy MAPNET protocol preceded IDNet.

IDNAC is Simplex’s powered addressable notification signalling line — the technology that drives TrueAlert ES self-testing horns, strobes and speakers. Unlike conventional notification appliance circuits (NACs), IDNAC carries both power and addressing on the same loop, so each appliance is individually addressed and powered (up to 127 addresses / 139 unit loads per IDNAC SLC, with dual Class A/B isolating outputs). This reduces home-run wiring and the number of booster power supplies, and enables automatic synchronisation and self-testing of every appliance. Class A/B isolators (DCAI) and expansion power supplies extend IDNAC capacity.

TrueAlarm analog detection technology

TrueAlarm is Simplex’s analog sensing philosophy: each sensor measures the level of smoke, heat or CO and reports that analog value to the control unit, which holds the alarm decision. Keeping the decision at the panel — rather than letting a device latch itself — enables powerful per-point intelligence:

  • Environmental compensation — the panel tracks each sensor’s average reading over time and compensates for gradual contamination (dust/dirt), maintaining sensitivity while resisting nuisance alarms.
  • Selectable sensitivity — photoelectric sensitivity can be set as fine as 0.2 %/ft obscuration for clean, sensitive applications, or in “standard” modes for harsher environments; multi-sensor/CO correlation sharpens effective sensitivity.
  • Maintenance alerts — the panel flags “dirty” sensors approaching their compensation limit, so maintenance is condition-based rather than guesswork; sensor status can be displayed or downloaded.
  • Day/night and application settings — sensitivity and behaviour can change by time and use, and sensors can self-diagnose and report life-cycle status (e.g. CO sensor end-of-life by date code).

TrueAlarm sensor range

The TrueAlarm sensor family connects to IDNet and shares a common addressable base architecture (standard, relay, isolator and sounder bases, plus CO sensor bases). Analog multi-sensor and CO-correlated sensing let designers push smoke sensitivity higher in clean areas while keeping strong false-alarm rejection in mixed environments.

Special detection

For spaces unsuited to point sensors, Simplex integrates specialist detection alongside TrueAlarm on the same system:

  • VESDA aspirating smoke detection — high-sensitivity aspirating detectors integrate as addressable points (the 4010ES supports up to 127 VESDA aspiration points), drawing air through a pipe network for very early warning in high-airflow, high-value or concealed spaces (data centres, clean rooms, warehouses, high ceilings).
  • Beam detection — projected-beam smoke detection for large open volumes such as atria, halls and warehouses.
  • Flame detection — flame detectors for fast-developing flaming fires in high-risk and process areas, interfaced via addressable modules.

TrueAlert ES — self-testing notification

TrueAlert ES is Simplex’s signature notification technology and one of the platform’s clearest differentiators. These are addressable horns, strobes, horn/strobes and speakers that test themselves: built-in light and sound sensors let the appliance verify that its strobe flashes and its sounder produces output, and the control unit detects and logs the result from every appliance. Faults in a speaker, sounder or strobe are detected in seconds and recorded per device.

Operationally this replaces a large part of manual notification-appliance testing (which codes such as NFPA 72 — and AS 1851 in Australasia — otherwise require to be performed by hand, device by device), cutting recurring inspection labour and disruption, especially in large or hard-to-access buildings. Because TrueAlert ES runs on the powered IDNAC line, all appliances on a loop are automatically synchronised to meet ADA strobe requirements — with no special programming, wiring or adapter/synchronisation modules — and notification wiring and power-supply counts are reduced versus conventional NAC designs.

Voice & mass notification

Simplex integrates emergency voice/alarm communication (EVAC) and mass notification into the control unit through the Voice Command Center (VCC). Audio is digital, with software-generated tones and stored voice messages distributed to TrueAlert ES speakers and speaker circuits. Amplification is provided by Flex-35, Flex-50 and 100 W amplifiers (25 V and 70.7 V), with backup-amplifier options, and firefighter telephone systems are supported for two-way communication. The platform is listed for UL 2572 mass notification, enabling layered fire and emergency/mass-notification messaging from one system.

ES Net networking

ES Net is Simplex’s network for connecting control units, network display units and the TrueSite Workstation into a distributed, supervised system. It carries fire data over copper Ethernet, single/multi-mode fibre or DSL media, with onboard IP ports on the network interface card and Class B or Class X (redundant) operation. Each panel is a network node performing local supervision and control while sharing point status and panel condition across the network; ES Net supports up to 99 network nodes, and a Network Display Unit annunciates up to 12,000 network points. Fibre media enables long inter-building runs, and redundant ring wiring provides high availability for campus-scale systems.

Management, service & programming software

Simplex provides a graphical-management and remote-service layer above the panels. Together these give building owners graphical supervision, remote oversight and condition-based service — complementing the self-testing TrueAlert ES devices to minimise manual inspection.

Releasing, power & enclosures

The ES platform supports multi-hazard suppression (releasing) control, with monitored release outputs and abort/manual-release interfaces for gaseous and other suppression systems. Power is delivered by the 9 A SPS/EPS/XPS/RPS family on the 4100ES (8 A on the 4010ES, 6 A on the 4007ES), with temperature-compensated battery charging from a few amp-hours up to 110 Ah (larger batteries in external cabinets). Panels are housed in modular bay enclosures sized to the configuration, with platinum or red finishes and glass-door options on larger units.

Simplex ES-series products are listed primarily to North American/global standards; regional certification should be confirmed per market:
