A Job Safety Analysis (also called a JSEA or job hazard analysis) breaks a task into its steps, identifies the hazards at each step, and sets out the controls to manage them. It’s a practical tool for planning safe work and briefing the crew, and for many routine tasks it’s the everyday equivalent of a risk assessment.
A JSA is a general tool for analysing the hazards of any job step by step. A SWMS is a specific document legally required before high-risk construction work — it must cover the defined hazards and controls and be followed. A JSA can support your planning, but high-risk construction work needs a compliant SWMS.
The people who do the work, together with their supervisor, since they know the task and its hazards best. Involving the crew also means they understand and own the controls. Review the JSA if the job, site or conditions change.
