Buy tiles by the box and from the same batch. Keep a few spares for future repairs — matching a discontinued tile later is nearly impossible.

How it works

1

Area to cover

Length times width gives the area to tile in square metres.

2

Tiles per square metre

One divided by the tile’s area (in metres) gives how many tiles cover a square metre — a 300 × 300 mm tile is about 11 per m².

3

Add waste

Cuts, breakages and future repairs mean you need extra — 10% for a straight lay, more for diagonal or patterned layouts.

Frequently asked questions

How many tiles do I need?

Divide the area to tile by the area of one tile, then add a waste allowance. A 12 m² floor in 300 × 300 mm tiles (about 11 per m²) needs roughly 132 tiles, or about 145 with 10% waste. Buy by the box and round up.

How much waste should I allow for tiling?

Around 10% for a standard straight lay, covering cuts around the edges and the odd breakage. Allow 15% or more for diagonal lays, patterns, or rooms with lots of cuts and obstacles. Keeping a few spare tiles for future repairs is wise.

Should I buy tiles from the same batch?

Yes. Tile colour and size can vary slightly between production batches, so order all you need — plus spares — at once and check the batch numbers match. Getting more of the same batch later is often impossible.

Does this include adhesive and grout?

No — it estimates tile quantity only. Adhesive and grout usage depends on the tile size, substrate, notch trowel and joint width, so check the product coverage figures for those separately.

This calculator estimates tile quantity for a rectangular area and is a general guide. Actual needs vary with layout, cuts, tile size and breakage. It doesn’t include adhesive, grout or substrate preparation. Confirm quantities and buy from a single batch with spares.
