How it works

1

Measure the area

Length times width gives the floor area to cover in square metres.

2

Add waste

Cuts, offcuts and future repairs mean buying more than the bare area — 5–10% for a straight lay, more for angled or patterned layouts.

3

Divide by pack coverage

Dividing the area (with waste) by how much one pack covers, and rounding up, gives the number of packs to buy.

Frequently asked questions

How much flooring do I need?

Take the room area, add a waste allowance for cuts and repairs, then divide by the coverage of one pack and round up. A 20 m² room with 8% waste is about 21.6 m², so at 2.2 m² per pack you’d buy 10 packs.

How much waste should I allow?

About 5–10% for a standard straight lay, covering the offcuts at the ends of rows and around the edges. Diagonal, herringbone and other patterns waste more, so allow 15% or higher. Always keep a spare pack for future repairs.

Why buy from the same batch?

Timber, laminate and vinyl flooring can vary slightly in shade and finish between production batches. Ordering everything at once — with spares — and checking batch numbers avoids a visible mismatch, especially if you need more later.

Does this include underlay and trims?

No — it estimates the flooring packs only. You’ll also need underlay, expansion trims, scotia or skirting and any adhesive, plus you must allow expansion gaps as the manufacturer specifies.

This calculator estimates flooring packs for a rectangular room and is a general guide. Actual needs vary with layout, cuts, board size and batch. It doesn’t include underlay, trims, adhesive or expansion allowances. Confirm quantities and buy from a single batch with spares.
